Peça uma demoKey LIMS Trends: What Laboratories Should Consider for 2025
Discover the key trends in Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) for 2025, from the Actiz blog.

Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) have undergone remarkable transformations in recent years, and as we approach 2025, this evolution is being driven by technological advances and the growing demands of an industry in constant transformation.
If, in the past, traditional LIMS platforms were limited to simple data management, they have evolved significantly to become integrated, smarter, and more connected platforms. Today, these platforms offer the ability to forecast scenarios, anticipate problems, ensure a complete traceability trail, perform real-time monitoring, and deliver strategic insights through advanced predictive analytics.
The future is now! We are already immersed in the digital era, and Industry 4.0 is a reality. It’s time to leave paper and spreadsheets behind and enter a new phase in which data, decisions, and innovation move forward together through advanced, intelligent platforms.
To illustrate how this scenario is already a reality, in October 2024, Pistoia Alliance and Open Pharma Research released the “Lab of the Future” report, which explores how life sciences laboratories should be structured through 2030. With participation from more than 200 laboratory managers worldwide, the survey found a significant increase in the use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML), rising from 54% in 2023 to 68% in 2024. In addition, 62% of respondents said they plan to invest in AI/ML over the next two years.
In this article, I share my perspective on what the market is already offering and what the key trends will be for the coming years.

Consolidation of LIMS in the SaaS Model
Os LIMS platforms in the SaaS model are becoming established as a strategic solution for laboratories seeking greater efficiency, collaboration, and security. Cloud computing offers scalability, flexibility, and cost reduction by eliminating the need for complex on-premises infrastructure.
With remote access, these systems facilitate collaboration between teams, especially in remote work scenarios or multi-site operations. In addition, cloud platforms enable real-time updates, remote monitoring, and simplified integration between data and processes.
Customization Capabilities
Traditional LIMS systems, known for their rigidity and inflexibility, are being replaced by low-code and no-code LIMS platforms, which offer highly customizable interfaces.
These solutions allow users to adapt the system to their specific needs, whether in an industrial quality control laboratory, a research and development lab, or a service-provider laboratory.
With these capabilities, professionals with little or no programming experience are able to configure the system according to their own workflows, without relying exclusively on external developers or lengthy implementation cycles. This results in significant savings in time and resources, providing greater autonomy, flexibility, and independence for the entire laboratory team.
LIMS Facilitating Regulatory Compliance
Regulatory compliance remains one of the fundamental pillars of operational excellence for laboratories, especially in a landscape where regulatory requirements tend to intensify, particularly for the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industries.
In this context, laboratories need to adopt a proactive approach to stay aligned with constantly evolving regulations. This isn’t just about meeting legal requirements, but also about demonstrating transparency, reliability, and a commitment to best practices to clients and stakeholders in a dynamic, competitive environment.
Modern LIMS solutions have established themselves as strategic tools for addressing these regulatory challenges. Through advanced functionality, these systems provide robust support for ensuring adherence to fundamental regulations such as GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices), GLP (Good Laboratory Practices), and ISO/IEC 17025, promoting real-time monitoring, full production-chain traceability, document management, and automated reporting.

Data Security and Privacy
With the growing volume and sensitivity of the data handled by laboratories, coupled with the increasing need for digital solutions and cloud storage, ensuring the privacy and security of this information has become a strategic priority.
LIMS vendors have been investing in advanced technologies to protect laboratory data against internal and external threats. Methods such as robust encryption, advanced user authentication protocols, and complete audit trails are used to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and traceability of information, delivering trust and security.
Advanced Analytics and Data Visualization
With the continuous growth in the volume of data generated by laboratories, real-time advanced analytics and interactive tools (charts, dashboards, etc.) have become essential elements in modern LIMS. These solutions go beyond simply turning raw data into information: they enable real-time monitoring of key performance indicators (KPIs), the identification of patterns and trends, and support for agile, well-grounded decision-making.
Through these capabilities, laboratories gain a clear, comprehensive view of their operational performance, enabling proactive, strategic adjustments to optimize efficiency, raise quality, and strengthen the reliability of results.
AI-Driven Automation
The automation provided by LIMS platforms has already been transforming laboratory efficiency, but in 2025 and the years ahead, its integration with Artificial Intelligence (AI) will accelerate this evolution even further.
AI-based algorithms will enable real-time decisions, the identification of complex patterns, and accurate predictions from large volumes of data.
Practical applications of AI in LIMS include:
- Intelligent scheduling, optimizing resource use and eliminating planning errors;
- Automatic review and approval, based on historical data;
- Intelligent inventory management, anticipating demand and avoiding disruptions and waste;
- Predictive equipment maintenance, preventing failures before they become critical;
- Stability studies, using AI to identify patterns and predict sample behavior over the long term.
Sustainable Laboratories with the Help of LIMS
The need for sustainable practices is growing across every industry, and laboratories are no exception. LIMS platforms are playing a crucial role in making laboratories more efficient and environmentally responsible.
LIMS platforms contribute significantly to sustainability by reducing paper consumption, replacing manual, physical processes with the full digitization of data and protocols. In addition, they optimize resource use, enabling precise inventory control and preventing the waste of reagents and materials.
Another advantage is energy savings, made possible by intelligent equipment scheduling, which avoids idle time and adjusts test schedules to minimize energy consumption. LIMS platforms also help track the life cycle of materials and equipment, encouraging recycling and reuse practices and reducing the amount of waste generated in the laboratory.
